A tussle has also erupted in Bengal regarding the position of Leader of the Opposition. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee has written to the Assembly Speaker, requesting that Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay be officially recognized as the Leader of the Opposition. In the letter, he has also sought recognition for Asima Patra and Nayna Bandyopadhyay as Deputy Leaders of the Opposition, and for Firhad Hakim as the party's Chief Whip. In his correspondence, Kalyan Banerjee has cited past precedents. Furthermore, he drew the Speaker's attention to the fact that when the latter was elected as the Assembly Speaker on May 15, it was Sobhandeb who escorted him to the Chair in his capacity as the Leader of the Opposition. Subsequently, in his inaugural address, the Speaker had indeed referred to Sobhandeb as the Leader of the Opposition.
