I explain why skills are essential for solving the problem of large context windows; unlike traditional methods of feeding full scripts or large markdown files, skills allow an agent to dynamically fetch only the specific instructions it needs (starting with metadata), making operations faster and more efficient. I compare Agent Skills (for internal project workflows) to MCPs (for third-party apps) and then provide a complete walkthrough on how to create your own custom skill.
